About

I am currently a student at Washington State University's Honors College working towards two BS degrees in Neuroscience and Psychology with a focus in behavior and learning, pre-veterinary studies. Prior to attending WSU, I was homeschooled and spent my last two years of high school enrolled in the Running Start program (dual enrollment in college and the highschool) at Bellevue College, where I completed my AAS. I will be continuing my education here at WSU's college of veterinary medicine, class of 2017. My research interests relate to the brain and how animals learn.

I believe that people should find something they genuinely love doing, and then master it. For that reason, my work is often also what I consider play, and I enjoy every minute of it. When not busy with my work, I love spending time outdoors in the beautiful (and yes, sometimes soggy) pacific northwest playing with my dogs, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, cycling, playing frisbee, climbing trees...you get the idea.

AgilityPup is a lot more than some pups that do agility; it encompases everything that I do: my own dogs' acomplishments, my photography and art, my studies and research, and my of course, plenty animal behavior and training.

Photography

I focus my photography on dog sports and other events around the pacific northwest. Agility, obedience, rally, disc, conformation, robotics competitions, and school events all fall under that category. I occasionaly add in some studio or candid pet portraits, but most of that is done on my own time, often with shelter dogs.

As part of my photography, I highly value the art of post-production processing; including everything from simple touch-ups to full-on digital design and photo manipulation in Photoshop. To me, digital photography is an art that can go far beyond simply freezing a moment in time.

For some examples of my work, please see the "Gallery" page.

Education: I have been training dogs for 10 years, and work diligently to stay abreast of current research regarding dog behavior and learning theory. I am currently about halfway through my academic education, working towards becoming a veterinary behaviorist. My undergraduate studies are in neuroscience and psychology, with a focus on learning and behavior. I have been accepted to the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine class of 2017, where I will study for my DVM.

Methods and Philosophy: Rewarded actions will be repeated; by either producing or withholding rewards we can easily modify behavior. This simple idea is applicable in all areas: teaching your dog to come when called, to do agility and obedience competitions, to not pull on the leash or jump up on strangers, to not bark and lunge at other dogs, and so on. My training techniques are positive, humane, and fun for both the handler and the dog! This type of training is appropriate for all ages and skill levels.

While dogs can be trained by yelling, jerking, poking, pinching, shocking, and "dominating" (please see the links below), these methods are outdated, some are scientifically invalid, and they can have many unwanted side effects while severely damaging your relationship with your dog. My techniques for teaching behaviors are flexible, and I believe dogs should be trained as individuals. However, I will not recommend the use of force, fear, or intimidation in any training program.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs!

Here you will find a brief selection of the questions I commonly get asked. If you have a question that you do not see here, feel free to e-mail me at katherine@agilitypup.com and I'll see what I can do.

What is a Clicker?
A clicker is a small noise maker that serves many different purposes; a cue, an event marker, a bridge, a conditioned reinforcer. Basically, it is a sound we train dogs to understand as meaning "you're doing the right thing and will be rewarded for it later."
How did you teach Dazzle all those tricks?
Well, that's a long story. Broadly speaking, I use the same general methods whenever I work with my dogs, and that method is positive reinforcement. You can read more about my training philosphy on the "Training" page.
How often do you train your dogs?
100% of the time I am with them! Did you know that any time you interact with your dog, you are actually training him? But as far as training a specific behaviour - we train in many small sessions a day, each no longer than 5 or 10 minutes in length.
Where did you get Dazzle?
I got Dazzle as a puppy from a trainer and breeder of working Border Collies here in Washington.
How old does my dog need to be before I start training him?
Luckily, there is no age limit on dog training! Puppies can start learning behaviours as soon as their eyes and ears open.
Where do you get the copyright free music for you videos?
I use music that is under varying Creative Commons licences for my videos. For more information on CC licences and where to find CC music, please visit creativecommons.org
What agility trials do you go to?
We compete in USDAA, CPE, NADAC, and soon UKI and ASCA trials. We trial mainly in Washington and Oregon.
What kind of camera do you use?
The majority of the time I shoot with a Canon 40D, but I have also used other dSLRs as well as smaller "pocket cams."
How old are you?
I am 19 years old.
Could you give me some training tips?
Yes and no. Giving training advice without having seen your dog is tricky. I am happy to answer most training question emails, but I strongly reccomend finding a trainer in your area.
Would you be interested in giving a demonstration at my event?
Most likely - yes! We often do volunteer presentations on dog training, ownership, and tricks, and have even performed at a child's birthday party. Just shoot me an email with some details and I'll get back to you (katherine@agilitypup.com).
Should I get a Border Collie?
Perhaps. Always do your research before getting any kind dog. Border Collies in particular are very high energy dogs who need their owners to devote a lot of time to them. I do not reccomend them for first-time dog owners.
My dog is not a Border Collie, do you think he can learn this stuff, too?
YES! Absolutely, any dog is capable of learning the behaviours that Dazzle knows. Just be patient and positive with your dog, and then the sky's the limit!
How long does it take to teach a trick?
That can vary a lot depending on the dog, the trainer, and the trick itself. Some tricks take just 10 minutes for a dog to learn, while others take months to master.
How can I get my dog to be faster in agility?
Many things contribute to some dogs running faster than others. Age, experience, confidence, physical fitness, and how fast we have trained them to go by selectively rewarding different performances are all contributing factors to consider when working with your dog.
My dog is older, can he still learn tricks/agility?
Absolutely! Dogs are never too old to learn. In fact, using positive training methods can be a great way to bring out the puppy in your older dog!
